Ohioans have overwhelmingly voted against a ballot measure that would have made it more difficult to amend the state constitution, a move by Republicans to try and block efforts to legalize abortion at the ballot box.
The outcome of the August special election was a resounding victory for Democrats, who have faced defeat after defeat in recent years. Opponents of Issue 1, the single item on the ballot, were winning with most of the votes tallied.
Groups that worked to defeat Issue 1, as well as Democrats at the state and national level, celebrated the decisive win. President Joe Biden even released a statement praising the result.
“Today, Ohio voters rejected an effort by Republican lawmakers and special interests to change the state’s constitutional amendment process,” Biden said. “This measure was a blatant attempt to weaken voters’ voices and further erode the freedom of women to make their own health care decisions.”
A proposal to codify abortion rights in the state constitution has already made the November ballot and needs only a simple majority to pass. This result is a major win for Democrats and a blow to Republicans who were hoping to block efforts to secure abortion rights.
