Hoover, Alabama – On Friday, Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell, a 25-year-old nursing student, surrendered to authorities at the Hoover City Jail to face two misdemeanor charges for falsely reporting a kidnapping.
Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said that Russell was charged with false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident. She was released on $1,000 bond for each charge. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail and a $6,000 fine.
The incident began on April 8 when Russell reported to police that she had been kidnapped and held for 49 hours. After an extensive investigation, police determined that Russell had made up the story and she confessed to the hoax.
Derzis said that Russell had turned herself in voluntarily and was booked and processed at the Hoover City Jail. She was accompanied by her attorney.
The case has been referred to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Russell is scheduled to appear in court on May 18.
