A 48-year-old woman from Derby, Kansas, was killed in a grizzly bear attack near the Montana-Idaho border on Saturday. Amie Adamson, a marathon runner and author of the 2020 e-book “Walking Out: One Teacher’s Reflections on Walking Out of the Classroom to Walk America,” was likely running or walking at the time of the attack.

The attack occurred a few hundred yards from a trailhead and a private campground and RV park near Yellowstone National Park. The Gallatin County Coroner’s Office identified Adamson as the victim of the mauling.

In response to the attack, wildlife workers have been setting bear traps for the third night in a row in an effort to capture the grizzly bear responsible. Officials have ruled out a rare predatory attack, suggesting that Adamson’s death was the result of a chance encounter with a grizzly or black bear.

The Buttermilk Trail, near the Town of West Yellowstone, Montana, has been closed to the public while the investigation is ongoing. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is asking anyone who may have seen the bear to contact them.
