Last week, Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Amber Lynn Costello, 27. Investigators are currently searching Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park, New York, for any potential trophies, souvenirs, jewelry, or other items that could be linked to the four women or other women that he may have been involved with.

Dr. Johanna Ellerup, Heuermann’s sister-in-law, expressed her shock and disbelief in an email to NBC News on Friday. “I am stunned and this disbelief alone is profound and altering,” she said.

Investigators are still gathering evidence and have not ruled out any possibilities. “In the coming days, as we continue to gather evidence, anything is possible,” an investigator told CBS News.

The Gilgo Beach murders have been a source of mystery and speculation since the bodies of the four women were discovered in 2010. With the arrest of Heuermann, investigators are hoping to finally bring closure to the case. The search of Heuermann’s home is ongoing, and it is unclear what, if any, evidence will be found.
