The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible alligator attack near a lagoon bordering a golf course in the Spanish Wells community on Hilton Head Island at around 9:30 a.m. Rescue efforts were made, however, an alligator appeared and was guarding the woman, interrupting emergency efforts.

The woman, who has not been named, was found dead at the edge of the lagoon and appeared to be unresponsive. This marks the second fatal alligator attack in Beaufort County in less than a year. In August 2022, an 88-year-old Sun City woman was attacked by an alligator at a lagoon near her home.

The sheriff’s office has not released any further information about the incident and is currently investigating the attack. The identity of the woman and the cause of death have not yet been released.
