Three elderly family members were found dead in a Newton, Massachusetts home Sunday morning in what law enforcement officials believe was a random attack.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said at a news conference Sunday evening that two of the individuals were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

“To have family gathered for this kind of a celebration makes it particularly tragic,” Ryan said.

The bodies were discovered at 10:14 a.m. Sunday when a concerned person went to check on them after they failed to arrive at church services. The victims’ names were not released.

The investigation is ongoing, and no suspects have been identified. Ryan said that police are looking into the possibility that the attack was random.

“We are asking the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity,” Ryan said. “We are also asking people to be aware of their surroundings and to take extra precautions to ensure their safety.”

The Newton Police Department is asking anyone with information about the attack to contact them.
