A mother and daughter were arrested in Louisiana this week after allegedly using fraudulent paperwork to enroll the 28-year-old daughter in a high school near New Orleans.
Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano and her mother, Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, were both arrested Tuesday morning and charged with injuring public records, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The arrests came several days after St. Charles Parish Public Schools notified the sheriff’s office on May 29 about a possible adult attending Hahnville High School in Boutte in the 2022-23 school year.
According to the sheriff’s office, Gutierrez-Serrano had used false identification to pose as a 17-year-old student. The mother and daughter face one count each of injuring public records.
If convicted, the crime in the second degree can carry a prison sentence of up to one year and a fine of up to $1,000. Conviction of the crime in the first degree can carry a prison sentence of up to five years, and a fine of up to $5,000, according to the Louisiana State Legislature.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming.
