Seven people were injured in a shooting at a Richmond, Virginia park on Tuesday following a high school graduation ceremony. The ceremony at the Altria Theater was abruptly canceled after shots rang out shortly after 5 p.m. at Monroe Park, near the theater, according to Richmond Police acting chief Rick Edwards.
Edwards said that off-duty officers working security inside the ceremony immediately responded to the scene and found three shooting victims with life-threatening injuries, and four with non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, two people were injured from falls, one person was hit by a car, and three people were treated for anxiety.
Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney expressed his shock and sadness at the incident. “A child should be able to go to the graduation … and enjoy the accomplishment with their friends and their families,” he said.
Stoney and law enforcement officials said more information would be released in the coming hours. The investigation is ongoing.
