NORAD Authorizes F-16 Fighter Aircraft to Intercept Private Plane Flying Unusual Path Over Washington, D.C.

On Sunday afternoon, a private plane caused a stir in the Washington, D.C. region when it flew an unexpected path over the nation’s capital. In response, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) authorized F-16 fighter aircraft to intercept the plane and travel at supersonic speeds.

The pilots of the “Capital Guardians,” a unit of the 113th Wing of the D.C. National Guard, determined that the pilot was incapacitated. The plane flew over New York’s Long Island, then headed south towards D.C. before crashing in Montebello, Virginia. As the fighter jet shadowed the Cessna, it caused a loud sonic boom that was heard across the capital region.

The cause of the pilot’s incapacitation is still unknown, and the incident is currently under investigation. No other aircraft were involved in the incident, and no injuries were reported.

NORAD is responsible for the air defense of North America and maritime warning. It is a joint operation between the United States and Canada, and is tasked with detecting, deterring, and defending against air threats.
