A tragedy has struck in New Bedford, Massachusetts, as a father and his 8-year-old son were found dead in their home in what officials are calling an apparent murder-suicide.

George Scott III, 54, and his son Dante Hazard were found dead at their home on Phillips Road after police executed a well-being check on Friday morning, according to a news release from the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

The District Attorney’s office said it appears the father, “killed the boy with a sharp object before taking his own life.” The well-being check was requested by a relative who had not been able to get in touch with the father.

Dante Hazard was the son of Lisa Hazard and George Scott III, authorities said. Lisa Hazard went missing under mysterious circumstances four years ago.

George Scott III was the son of former Red Sox star George Scott, who played for the team from 1966 to 1979.

The Bristol District Attorney’s office said it is continuing to investigate the incident and is asking anyone with information to contact them. The office also said it is offering counseling services to those affected by the tragedy.
