A decades-old mystery in California has been solved after the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office identified the remains of a woman found near campsites in Warner Springs in 1986.

Claudette Jean Zebolsky Powers, who was born in Michigan in January 1962, was identified through DNA testing and genetic genealogy. She had been living with her husband in Washington state before moving to San Diego in 1983 or 1984, according to family.

The remains of Powers, who was 22 at the time of her death, were found on February 16, 1986, near campsites on the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation in Warner Springs, a spot on the Pacific Crest Trail.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office also found an unidentified male victim “around the same time and area,” but have not revealed the cause of death for either victim.

The Sheriff’s Office is now hoping to identify both Powers’ killer and the male victim who was also found murdered nearby.
