The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs made history on Monday night, becoming the first team to win back-to-back College Football Playoff National Championships with a 65-7 victory over the No. 3 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.
The Bulldogs (15-0) were led by Heisman Trophy-finalist quarterback Stetson Bennett, who passed for four touchdowns and ran for two more. Georgia scored on their first six drives, taking a 38-7 lead into halftime and never looking back.
TCU quarterback Max Duggan, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, scored the Horned Frogs’ only touchdown on a rushing play in the first quarter. The Bulldogs defense was dominant, holding the Horned Frogs to just seven points and forcing two turnovers.
The Bulldogs’ victory marks the first time a team has won back-to-back national titles since Alabama in 2011 and 2012. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart praised his team’s performance, saying, “It’s a great accomplishment for our team and our program. We’ve worked hard to get here and it’s a great feeling to be able to win back-to-back championships.”
The Bulldogs’ win caps off an impressive season, in which they went 15-0 and defeated three top-10 opponents. Georgia will now look to continue their success next season as they look to become the first team to win three consecutive national championships since Nebraska in 1994-97.
