Man Charged with Attempted Homicide and Arson in Firebombing Attack on Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence During Passover

Authorities have charged a man in connection with an arson incident at the residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Cody A. Balmer, is accused of scaling the fence of the governor’s home, breaking a window with a hammer, and using Molotov cocktails to ignite the fire. The Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday that Balmer faces multiple charges, including attempted criminal homicide, aggravated arson, burglary, and terrorism.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning, coinciding with the first night of Passover. Governor Shapiro, his wife Lori Shapiro, and several guests and staff members were present in the Harrisburg residence when the fire broke out around 2 a.m. A press conference held later in the day provided further details, with officials describing the attack as a “firebombing” and releasing photographs and video footage of the aftermath.

Prosecutors have reported that the governor’s residence sustained “substantial damage” due to the fire. The severity of the incident was highlighted during the press conference, as initial reports did not fully convey the extent of the damage. The Pennsylvania State Police, along with Governor Shapiro, have been actively involved in the investigation and response to the attack.
