A second child in Texas has succumbed to a measles-related illness, as confirmed by a hospital spokesperson on Sunday. Aaron Davis, representing UMC Health System in Lubbock, Texas, reported that the child was under medical care for measles complications and had not been vaccinated. This incident is part of a larger measles outbreak that originated in West Texas and continues to expand.

The outbreak initially began at the Tiny Tots U Learning Academy, a childcare center with around 230 young children, on March 24. It was triggered when a young girl, who had been experiencing fever and vomiting, tested positive for measles. The recent death highlights the ongoing challenges in controlling the spread of the disease in the region.

As of Friday, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported a total of 481 confirmed measles cases, marking a 14% increase from the previous week. This surge in cases underscores the rapid spread of the outbreak, which has now reached at least two other states. Meanwhile, more than a dozen other states, along with Washington, D.C., are managing separate measles cases that are not linked to the Texas outbreak.

Despite the severity of the situation, neither the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nor the Texas State Department of State Health Services have included the child’s death in their latest measles reports. The hospital has not disclosed the exact date of the child’s passing, emphasizing the sensitive nature of the ongoing health crisis.
