An American citizen, George Glezmann, has been released by the Taliban after being detained in Afghanistan for over two years. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the release on Thursday, confirming that Glezmann is on his way back to the United States. Glezmann, originally from Atlanta, was taken into custody by Taliban authorities during a tourist visit to Afghanistan in December 2022. The U.S. government had classified his detention as wrongful.

The release of Glezmann was described as a “goodwill gesture” by the Taliban towards former President Donald Trump, according to a statement by former U.S. government envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, on social media platform X. This development follows the earlier release of two other Americans, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, who were freed in a deal during the final days of the Biden administration. Secretary of State Rubio expressed gratitude to Qatar for its role in facilitating Glezmann’s release. He highlighted Qatar’s “steadfast commitment and diplomatic efforts” as being crucial in securing the American’s freedom.
