A 30-year-old man has died after he breached an emergency exit at Salt Lake City International Airport and climbed into a plane engine on Monday night, according to police and airport officials.

The man was found unconscious inside the engine’s removable metal covering and authorities performed lifesaving efforts, but he died on the scene. Ninety-five passengers were on board the commercial aircraft when police and aircraft employees located the man.

The Salt Lake City International Airport released a statement saying that the man’s name is being withheld until family members are notified. It is unclear why the man climbed into the plane engine.

The airport official said in a statement that the man ran to the south end of the airport’s west runway where deicing operations were underway and “crawled into an aircraft engine that was not running.”

The incident is under investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Federal Aviation Administration. The airport has said that safety and security of passengers and employees is their top priority.
