On Friday, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum confirmed the death of Gadi Haggai, a 73-year-old Israeli-American dual citizen, who was kidnapped by the Hamas militant group during its Oct. 7 attack on Southern Israel.
Gadi Haggai and his wife, Judy Weinstein Haggai, were seized from Kibbutz Nir Oz when they were out for their “regular morning walk” on Oct. 7. Weinstein is thought to be the oldest woman remaining among the hostages.
The couple were taken during a Hamas attack on Southern Israel, which also resulted in the death of several Israeli soldiers. Haggai, a gifted flautist, had played in the Israeli Defense Forces Orchestra.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum released a statement mourning the loss of Haggai, saying, “A musician at heart, a gifted flautist, he played in the IDF Orchestra and was involved with music his whole life.”
Haggai is the latest confirmed fatality among hostages held by Palestinian militants in the territory since the day of the attack. His wife, Weinstein, remains in Hamas’ hands.
The Israeli government has yet to comment on the death of Haggai, but the Hostages and Missing Families Forum has called for the government to take action to bring Weinstein home safely.
