In a remarkable discovery, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced Tuesday that a body found in an open field near the Las Vegas Strip in 1979 has been identified as 19-year-old Gwenn Marie Story.
The body was discovered on the night of August 14, 1979, by a man walking through a vacant lot near the northern edge of the Strip. For 44 years, the woman was known only as “Sahara Sue Doe,” a nickname given to her based on the intersection where she was found.
Police said that advancements in DNA testing led to the identification of the body last month. Story had left her home in Ohio in 1979 in search of her biological father.
“We are grateful to the family of Gwenn Marie Story for their patience and understanding as we worked to bring closure to this case,” said Las Vegas Police Captain Robert Plummer. “We hope that this brings them some peace.”
The police department is asking anyone with information about the case to contact them. They are also asking anyone who may have known Story in 1979 to come forward.
