Federal investigators are traveling to New Jersey on Wednesday to investigate a fatal helicopter crash that occurred in the Wharton State Forest the night before.

The New Jersey State Park Police received a call just before 11 p.m. Tuesday about a missing helicopter in the area of Wharton State Forest. After searching the wooded area off Mullica River Road in Washington Township, Burlington County, the wreckage was found just after midnight.

The Philadelphia news helicopter was carrying a pilot and photographer, both of whom were contracted with U.S. Helicopters. According to 6ABC, the helicopter went down after 8 p.m. and both individuals on board were killed in the crash.

The news station that the pilot and photographer worked for released a statement calling it a “devastating day” and saying that they had a long history with the station and had been working as part of the Action News team for years.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are sending investigators to the scene of the crash to determine the cause. The investigation is expected to take several days.
