New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is showing his appreciation for his former high school basketball coach, Butch Stockton, in a big way.
During the MSG Network broadcast of Thursday night’s Knicks win over the Detroit Pistons, Stockton shared an emotional story about Robinson’s generous offer to move in with him after the death of his wife, Dawn, in September.
Stockton, who coached Robinson at Chalmette High School in Louisiana, revealed that Robinson had visited his wife in the hospital every day and became close to the couple. After her death, Robinson proposed that Stockton move in with him at his home in New York.
“It’s just been a blessing,” Stockton told MSG’s Rebecca Haarlow during the game. “He’s been a great friend, a great roommate.”
Robinson, 25, is known for his defensive prowess on the court, but his off-court generosity is equally impressive. The 7-foot center is a two-time NBA All-Star and is averaging 8.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game this season.
“It’s a testament to the kind of person Mitchell is,” Stockton said. “He’s a great basketball player, but he’s an even better person.”
