Former U.S. Olympic swimmer Klete Keller was sentenced on Friday to three years probation and six months of home detention for his involvement in the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Keller had previously pleaded guilty to the felony crime of obstruction of an official proceeding.
Keller, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was identified by the government inside the Capitol Rotunda during the riot due to a U.S.A. athletic jacket he was wearing. Prosecutors noted in their sentencing memo that Keller had “thrown that flag in a trash can” during the attack.
Keller had faced a possible sentence of 10 months in federal prison, but prosecutors asked for a sentence below the guideline range, citing his extensive cooperation with the government and the fact that his actions were “unconscionable.”
Keller, who competed in the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Olympics, was part of a mob that stormed the Capitol in an attempt to obstruct Congress’ work in certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. The attack left five people dead and resulted in hundreds of arrests.
Keller’s sentencing comes as the Department of Justice continues to investigate and prosecute those involved in the attack. The DOJ has charged more than 400 people in connection with the attack, and more charges are expected.
