House of Representatives to Vote on Resolution to Expel Embattled New York Republican Rep. George Santos This Week

Washington — The House of Representatives will vote on a resolution to expel embattled New York Republican Rep. George Santos this week, after a damning report from the House Ethics Committee earlier this month found “substantial evidence” that Santos had broken the law.

The resolution, introduced by California Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, is privileged, meaning Republican leadership must bring it to the floor for a vote within two legislative days.

The House Ethics Committee report alleged that Santos had stolen money from his congressional campaign to pay for his personal expenses, reported fake loans, deceived donors and engaged in fraudulent business dealings. Santos has admitted to lying about his background and has pleaded not guilty to multiple federal charges.

The House of Representatives voted on a similar resolution to expel Santos on Nov. 1, but the measure failed to pass. A supermajority, or two-thirds, vote is required to expel a member from Congress.

If the resolution is passed this week, it would be the first time in more than two decades that a member of Congress has been expelled. It would also be the first time in history that a member of Congress has been expelled due to criminal charges.

The vote on the resolution is expected to take place later this week.
