Rep. George Santos, a New York Republican, is facing expulsion from Congress following a damning House ethics report that found he had spent thousands of dollars of campaign funds on personal expenses. During a three-hour long appearance on a live audio program Friday, Santos declared he would “wear it like a badge of honor” if he were to be expelled.
The 56-page report, released earlier this month, alleged Santos had funneled large sums of money through his campaign and businesses to pay for his personal expenses, including on cosmetic procedures such as Botox, at luxury stores Hermès and Ferragamo, and on smaller items like meals and haircuts.
Santos, who spoke with conservative host Monica Matthews on X Spaces, formerly known as Twitter Spaces, said he expects to be expelled from Congress in the coming days. “I will defend myself to the end of time,” Santos said.
The House Ethics Committee has yet to take action on the report, but Santos’s colleagues have already begun to distance themselves from him. Several Republican lawmakers have called for his resignation, and some have even suggested he should be expelled.
Santos’s defiance has been met with criticism from both sides of the aisle. Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Santos’s comments were “disgusting” and “unacceptable” and that he should be held accountable for his actions.
It remains to be seen what action the House Ethics Committee will take, but it is clear that Rep. George Santos’s future in Congress is uncertain.
