Today, Israeli security forces confirmed the arrest of the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency, said that the director had been taken in for questioning following evidence that the facility had “served as a Hamas command and control center.”
The statement also said that the Hamas terror tunnel network situated under the hospital had exploited electricity and resources taken from the hospital, and that Hamas had stored numerous weapons inside the hospital and on the hospital grounds. The director of the medical complex is known to be Dr. Muhammad Abu Salamiya.
The arrest comes as a diplomatic breakthrough promised some relief for the over 1.7 million Palestinians who have fled their homes under weeks of Israeli bombardment, as well as families in Israel fearful for the fate of their loved ones captured during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that triggered the war. The agreement for a four-day cease-fire in Gaza and the release of dozens of Hamas-held hostages and Palestinians imprisoned by Israel was set to take effect on Thursday, but Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, announced a delay late Wednesday without providing a reason.
The arrest of the Al-Shifa Hospital director is yet another development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what the implications of this arrest will be.
