Washington D.C. – On Thursday, the House Ethics Committee released a report detailing “a complex web of unlawful activity” involving Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.). The report found “substantial evidence” that Santos committed fraud, violated ethics rules, and illegally used campaign funds for personal purposes.
In response to the report, Rep. Michael Guest (R-Miss.), the chairman of the House Ethics Committee, filed a resolution to expel Santos from Congress. Guest said the evidence revealed by the committee is “more than sufficient” to warrant the “most appropriate” punishment of expulsion.
Santos, who was elected to the House in 2018, announced Thursday that he will not seek reelection. He has served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Small Business.
The House Ethics Committee’s report details a number of violations by Santos, including using campaign funds to pay for personal expenses, failing to properly report campaign contributions, and using his official position to benefit his business interests.
The resolution to expel Santos from Congress is now in the hands of the House of Representatives. If the resolution passes, Santos would be the first member of Congress to be expelled since 2002.
