A federal trial is underway in San Francisco for David DePape, accused of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for the performance of their duties.

Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, took the stand Monday afternoon to testify against DePape. He recalled being bludgeoned by a hammer-wielding assailant and waking up in a pool of his own blood.

Pelosi testified that the attack occurred on October 28, 2022, when he heard a knock on the door of his Pacific Heights home. When he opened the door, he saw a large man with a hammer in one hand and some ties in the other. The man asked for Nancy, and Pelosi said he was immediately attacked.

Pelosi said there are surveillance cameras inside the couple’s home as well as an alarm system, but he had not set the alarm that night.

DePape has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial is ongoing, and the prosecution is expected to call more witnesses in the coming days.
