Six people, including former NFL cornerback D.J. Hayden, were killed in a two-vehicle crash in downtown Houston early Saturday morning.
According to Houston Police Assistant Chief Megan Howard, the crash occurred at around 2 a.m. when a Chrysler 300, travelling at a high velocity, ran a red light and collided with an SUV. Five of the victims were males and one was a female.
The University of Houston Athletics released a statement confirming that Hayden, Ralph Oragwu and Zach McMillian—three former University of Houston football players—were among the victims of the crash.
“We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, as we collectively mourn the loss of three individuals who made an indelible impact on each life they touched,” the university’s statement said.
The driver of the Chrysler and a man who appeared to be homeless were also killed in the crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Hayden, a former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back, was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2013 and played for the Detroit Lions in 2018. He was 28 years old.
