House Oversight Committee Issues Subpoenas as Part of Impeachment Inquiry into President Joe Biden

The House Oversight Committee has issued three subpoenas as part of their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The subpoenas call for the president’s son, Hunter Biden, to appear for a deposition on December 13th, and for James Biden, the president’s brother, and Rob Walker, a Biden family associate, to appear for depositions on December 6th and November 29th, respectively.

In addition, the committee has requested transcribed interviews with Sara Biden, Hallie Biden, Elizabeth Secundy, Melissa Cohen, and Tony Bobulinski, all of whom are associated with the Biden family.

The decision to interview special counsel David Weiss privately, rather than in a televised hearing, likely reflects the challenges Republicans face in arguing that the Justice Department has shown favoritism to the president’s son even as it’s prosecuting him for multiple crimes. The Justice Department has repeatedly pledged to make the prosecutor investigating the president’s son available for public testimony.

The subpoenas, which were issued by House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, focus on the Biden family’s business dealings. It is unclear what evidence the committee is seeking or what implications the inquiry may have for the president.

The impeachment inquiry is ongoing, and the committee is expected to continue to issue subpoenas and interview witnesses in the coming weeks. It remains to be seen what the outcome of the inquiry will be.
