Israel has launched the next phase of its offensive in the Gaza Strip, targeting Hamas’ extensive tunnel network in the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military has begun to move troops and armored vehicles over the border into Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing the start of a second phase in an operation to eliminate Hamas and return the more than 230 hostages taken on October 7th.

In order to target the tunnels, Israel has cut off electricity and communication services to the entire enclave of more than 2 million people. Intense shelling by artillery and air has been reported over the weekend, with first responders unable to be called.

Hamas is believed to have built an elaborate network of tunnels, shafts and rooms stretching more than 300 miles and possibly to a depth of more than 200 feet. Israel is aiming to eliminate Hamas in the labyrinth of passages, and has already hit hundreds of underground targets.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing for years, with no end in sight. The Israeli offensive is the latest in a long line of attempts to bring peace to the region.
