Actor Richard Roundtree, best known for his role as detective John Shaft in the 1971 film “Shaft,” has died at his home in Los Angeles. He was 81.

Roundtree’s manager, Patrick McMinn, confirmed his death to Variety, saying he had been battling pancreatic cancer.

Roundtree’s career in film and television spanned more than 50 years, beginning with his first major role in “Shaft” in 1971. He also appeared in five “Shaft” sequels and had a notable role as Sam Bennett in the 1977 TV miniseries “Roots.”

McMinn said in a statement that Roundtree’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film.

“The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated,” McMinn said.

In a 2022 interview, Roundtree said he was still surprised by the attention he received for his role in “Shaft.”

“I constantly deal with being called Shaft, and it never ceases to blow me away,” he said.

Roundtree was born in New Rochelle, New York, and attended Southern Illinois University. He is survived by his wife, Maria, and two children.
