Democrats Urge Rep. Dean Phillips to Avoid Primary Challenge Against President Biden in 2024

Democrats are urging Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) not to launch a primary bid against President Joe Biden in 2024, citing fears that it would only benefit congressional Republicans and their potential front-runner, Donald Trump. Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) said Phillips should instead return to Minnesota.

The Republican Party is reportedly in disarray, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) floating a plan to reinstall himself as House Speaker and make Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) the assistant speaker. According to one GOP lawmaker, the proposal is a sign of desperation.

Democrats have been supportive of Biden’s policies and accomplishments, and Welch said that the focus should remain on defeating Trump in the next election. He added that Phillips should not be a distraction from that goal.

The Republican Party has been without a leader since McCarthy was removed from the speaker’s office. The proposed alliance between McCarthy and Jordan is seen as a way to unite the divided factions of the House Republican Conference.

The Democratic Party is hoping to avoid a primary challenge to Biden in 2024, as it could potentially weaken the party’s chances of winning the election. Phillips has yet to make an announcement about his plans for the future.
