Key takeaways:

  • Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has not yet endorsed former President Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
  • Aid convoys have been making their way into Gaza for the first time since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
  • The U.S. has increased its military presence in the Middle East to help defend Israel if necessary.

On Sunday, Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) spoke on NBC’s “Meet The Press” about why he has not yet endorsed former President Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election.

“Because I’ve got a Southern border wide open, I have war in the Middle East, I’ve got things I’m focused on right now,” McCarthy said. “Well, the campaign is still going. I believe President Trump will be our nominee. There’s a very good chance I would endorse President Trump.”

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, aid convoys have been making their way into Gaza for the first time since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. On Saturday, a convoy of trucks carrying food, water, and medicine entered through the Rafah border crossing. A second convoy of 14 trucks entered through the same crossing on Sunday.

Humanitarian groups have applauded the aid, but say it falls dangerously short of what is needed to help civilians on the ground. Many in the region are without clean water, making them even more vulnerable.

At the same time, the U.S. has increased its military presence in the Middle East to help defend Israel if necessary. The Defense Department has not released any further details on the increased presence.
