Key takeaways:

  • Israel bombarded Gaza, hitting areas in the south and evacuating a sizable Israeli town near the Lebanese border
  • Hezbollah released a video showing attacks along the border between Lebanon and Israel
  • The U.N. has called for fuel to be allowed in alongside aid, and for both sides to de-escalate and reach a ceasefire

Early Friday morning, Israel bombarded Gaza, hitting areas in the south where Palestinians had been told to seek safety. In addition, Israel began evacuating a sizable Israeli town in the north near the Lebanese border, signaling a potential ground invasion of Gaza that could cause regional turmoil.

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah’s media arm released a video showing attacks along the border between Lebanon and Israel. Palestinians in Gaza reported heavy airstrikes in Khan Younis in the south, and ambulances carrying men, women and children streamed into the town’s Nasser Hospital, Gaza’s second largest.

The Israeli military said it had struck more than 100 targets across Gaza linked to the territory’s Hamas rulers, including a tunnel and arms depots. The U.N. has called for fuel to be allowed in alongside the aid so that it can distribute aid efficiently.

An aid worker in Khan Younis expressed concern over the situation, saying “everyday is worse than before.” The Israeli military has said it is targeting Hamas militants and infrastructure, while Hamas has fired hundreds of rockets into Israel.

The situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly dire, with the potential for a ground invasion looming. As the conflict continues, the U.N. is calling for both sides to de-escalate and for a ceasefire to be reached.
