Two American women from Evanston, Illinois, were taken hostage by Hamas militants on October 7th while visiting their grandmother in Israel for her 85th birthday. Natalie Raanan, 17, and her mother Judith Raanan, 59, were visiting Israel as part of their summer and fall travel plans, which included a trip to Italy.

Former Israel-based NBC News correspondent Martin Fletcher revealed the news during an MSNBC appearance. Fletcher, who served as Middle East correspondent and Tel Aviv bureau chief, said that the two were last seen with their hands tied, being dragged away by the Hamas militants.

Natalie had just graduated from Deerfield High School and hoped to work in fashion, interior design or tattooing following her summer and fall travel plans. Judith is an artist and never missed a sabbath service at her local synagogue.

At 3:15 p.m. on October 7th, the hostages were released by Hamas. Fletcher choked up as he explained the situation to MSNBC’s. The two women are now safe and back in Evanston, Illinois.

The Raanan family has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and prayers from family, friends, and the community. They are thankful for the safe return of Judith and Natalie and are grateful for the efforts of all those involved in their release.
