Pembroke Pines, Florida – On Tuesday night, a 33-year-old GameStop clerk, Derrick Guerrero, was working at a suburban Fort Lauderdale strip mall when a man attempted to steal five boxes of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet “ultra-premium” trading cards. The man dropped the cards and ran outside to a waiting pickup truck, where a woman called police. In response, Guerrero pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired one shot, hitting the man in the side.

The man was later pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, store security cameras show the shoplifter never threatened Guerrero nor displayed any weapons. As a result, Guerrero has been charged with manslaughter.

The incident has sparked a debate on the use of firearms in self-defense. While some argue that Guerrero was justified in using a gun to protect himself and his property, others argue that the use of lethal force was unnecessary and could have been avoided.

The case is currently under investigation and Guerrero is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks. In the meantime, GameStop has released a statement expressing their condolences to the family of the deceased and reminding customers that the safety of their employees and customers is their top priority.
