On Tuesday, the Saint Louis Zoo announced the death of a 27-year-old Asian elephant, Rani, who had been part of the zoo’s herd since 2002. According to the zoo, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a small, unleashed and lost dog was seen running in a non-public area near the Elephant Barn. The presence of the dog caused an elephant outside to become agitated, and the Elephant Care team moved the elephant indoors.
Unfortunately, despite the team’s best efforts, Rani died less than half an hour after the dog was seen. Initial necropsy results revealed some preexisting changes in Rani’s heart and further testing is being done to determine the significance of the changes.
“Our team of professional animal care experts did everything possible, but we couldn’t save Rani,” said Zoo Director Michael Macek in a news release. “We ask for the community’s thoughts and support during this difficult time.”
Rani had been part of the Saint Louis Zoo since 2002 and was a beloved member of the herd. The zoo is asking for the community’s support during this difficult time as they continue to investigate the cause of Rani’s death.
