After nearly two decades of speculation, the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005 has finally been solved. On Wednesday, Joran van der Sloot, the chief suspect in the case, pleaded guilty to extortion and wire fraud charges in federal court and admitted to bludgeoning Holloway to death on an Aruban beach and pushing her body into the water.

U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco sentenced van der Sloot to 10 years in prison for the extortion and wire fraud charges, taking into account his confession to the murder of Holloway. The plea deal required van der Sloot to reveal what happened to Holloway in exchange for the charges.

Van der Sloot had long been linked to Holloway’s disappearance, and had been the chief suspect since the Alabama teen vanished in 2005. He had been arrested twice in connection to the case, but was never charged.

In June of 2023, van der Sloot was extradited from Peru to the U.S. to face charges of extortion and wire fraud in connection to Holloway’s case. He was accused of trying to get money from Holloway’s mother in exchange for revealing the location of her daughter’s body.
