The United States is deploying more military power to the eastern Mediterranean, likely in response to the escalating conflict in the region. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday that the Biden administration is focused on ensuring the safe passage of Palestinian-Americans out of Gaza.
Sullivan said on “Face the Nation” Sunday morning that the U.S. is working on the issue “round the clock.” He also addressed the discrepancy between his assessment of the region as “quieter” than it had been in two decades and the current situation. Sullivan said he made those comments “in the context of developments in the wider Middle East region over the last few years.”
The Biden administration is also working to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Sullivan said the U.S. is “working with all of the parties in the region to try to bring an end to the violence and to try to bring a ceasefire into effect.”
The U.S. is also working with other countries in the region to try to bring about a lasting peace. Sullivan said the U.S. is “working with our partners in the region, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations, to try to bring about a ceasefire and then to try to bring about a longer-term resolution of the underlying issues that have led to this conflict.”
The Biden administration is committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict and ensuring the safe passage of Palestinian-Americans out of Gaza. Sullivan said the U.S. is “working on that round the clock.”
