The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden has been interviewed by the office of special counsel Robert Hur as part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents.
The inquiry, which is being led by Hur, was launched after documents with classification markings were discovered at Biden’s Wilmington home and former private office.
White House spokesman Ian Sams said in a statement that the voluntary interview was conducted over two days, Sunday and Monday, at the White House.
“As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are cooperating with this investigation, and as it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation,” Sams said.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday night.
Hur is the second special counsel appointed to oversee an investigation into sensitive documents, after Jack Smith was tapped to take over the probe into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified information. The White House has not provided any further details on the investigation.
