A 62-year-old Texas man has been charged after he fired a blank round at a wedding in Nebraska, resulting in an injury to his 12-year-old grandson.

Michael Gardner, the officiant of the wedding, was attempting to rally the guests at the Hillside Events venue near Denton on Saturday when he fired a blank round from a Pietta 1860 snub nose revolver into the air. According to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin, the round slipped and shot Gardner’s grandson in the left shoulder.

Houchin said that Gardner had “decided to gain everybody’s attention and start the wedding with a bang.” However, his plan backfired and resulted in an injury to his grandson.

The 12-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for the injury. Gardner was arrested and charged with felony child abuse and use of a firearm to commit a felony. He is currently being held in the Lancaster County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of gun safety and the potential consequences of recklessness. It is unclear what the long-term effects of the injury will be, but the incident serves as a cautionary tale for those who handle firearms.
