Biden Administration Seeks to Provide Aid to Ukraine Despite Political Turmoil Following McCarthy Ouster

The ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has thrown the future of U.S. assistance to Ukraine into doubt, with some of Ukraine’s allies suggesting a different approach to providing aid. President Joe Biden has responded to the political upheaval by announcing plans for a “major speech” about the importance of arming Ukraine.

The Biden administration is now searching for a way to keep U.S. weapons flowing to Ukraine in its war with Russia, but the uncertainty of who will replace McCarthy and how much they will push for more aid is making the task more difficult. To make matters worse, Republicans have grown increasingly reluctant to approve more help.

In light of this, some of Ukraine’s allies are suggesting a different approach: instead of providing small amounts of aid, they suggest providing a large enough amount to allow Ukraine to keep fighting Russian invaders until after the 2024 elections. This would be a much tougher political sell, but recent votes in the House and opinion polls show it may be more palatable than the current piecemeal approach.

The Biden administration is now working to find a way to provide the necessary aid to Ukraine without facing too much opposition. It remains to be seen how successful they will be in this endeavor, but it is clear that the ouster of McCarthy has made the task much more difficult.
