Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes said the crash happened around 9:25 p.m. local time on U.S. Highway 40, about a half-mile east of Teutopolis. The semi-truck carrying 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia rolled over in a ditch, causing a toxic leak.

Illinois State Police were notified of the crash and estimated that about 4,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia had been released. The leak has since been “partially patched,” according to a news release.

The five people who died in the crash have not yet been identified. The five people who were hospitalized are being treated for their injuries.
