A man was arrested after a shooting at a protest in Española, New Mexico, on Thursday left one person injured, according to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting occurred a little before 12:30 p.m. local time in front of the county’s offices, where a statue of Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate was to have been displayed before the county reversed course the night before. A large crowd of protesters had gathered outside the location, and the shooting stemmed from an altercation between them, a sheriff’s office spokesperson told CBS News.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Martinez, 23, was taken into custody by state police. The victim was taken to the hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
The rededication of the statue was postponed indefinitely in the interest of public safety, the sheriff said. However, some people still gathered outside the office Thursday morning.
The shooting is under investigation by the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office and the New Mexico State Police. No further information has been released at this time.
