Judge Dismisses All Charges Against Former Police Officer in Shooting Death of Motorist Eddie Irizarry

A Philadelphia Municipal Judge has dismissed all charges, including murder, against former police officer Mark Dial in the shooting death of motorist Eddie Irizarry.

The incident occurred on August 14th when Dial pulled over Irizarry and opened fire multiple times through the rolled-up driver’s side window. Surveillance video and police body camera footage of the incident was played in court on Tuesday.

Judge Wendy Pew ruled that there was not enough evidence to go to trial, leading to an emotional reaction from Irizarry’s family and loved ones in court. Dial had been charged with murder and several other counts this month in Irizarry’s death.

The Philadelphia Police Commissioner had previously said Dial refused to obey orders from a superior officer and failed to cooperate with the department’s investigation. Dial had been on the police force since 2017.

The ruling has sparked debate over the use of force by police officers and the need for greater accountability. Irizarry’s family has called for an independent investigation into the shooting.
