Eight people were hospitalized after a JetBlue flight from Ecuador to Florida experienced severe turbulence on Monday, Sept. 25.

Flight 1256, which took off from Guayaquil, Ecuador, and was headed to Fort Lauderdale, “experienced sudden severe turbulence as it neared Florida,” JetBlue said in a statement. The flight landed safely at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, JetBlue said, where it was met by medical personnel.

Seven passengers and one crew member were taken to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation, officials said. JetBlue said it will work to support the customers and crew members affected.

The cause of the turbulence is still unknown. JetBlue said it is working with the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the incident.

The airline said it is also offering customers and crew members affected by the turbulence “any assistance they may need.” JetBlue said it is “grateful for the professionalism of our crew members and the care of the medical personnel who responded.”
