According to a report from the CBS News affiliate WTSP in Tampa, a group of seven people were in a Cadillac Escalade when the train crashed into them at around 6:45 p.m. while they were on their way to a quinceaƱera at a home just across the railroad tracks.
Video from the front of the freight train showed the driver approaching the crossing in the area of Highway 92 and Jim Lefler Circle in Plant City, which reportedly wasn’t signalized. Five of the passengers were violently ejected from the vehicle upon impact. Sheriff Chad Chronister explained during a press conference that instead of yielding at the posted stop sign, the driver slowly crawled across the tracks.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the National Transportation Safety Board. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
