Grammy-winning singer and activist Lizzo is facing a new lawsuit from a former employee who claims that the entertainer allowed a hostile work environment in which staff were subjected to bullying, harassment and racial discrimination.
The lawsuit was filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Asha Daniels, a wardrobe designer who worked on Lizzo’s tour earlier this year. The same day, Lizzo was set to receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award from the Black Music Action Coalition in recognition of her work promoting inclusivity and social justice.
Daniels told NBC News that she felt like she was “living in a madhouse” while working on the tour. She said that she was particularly disheartened by the contrast between Lizzo’s public message of self-love and caring for others and the hostile work environment she allegedly experienced.
The suit names multiple people involved with the tour, including Lizzo, whose given name is Melissa Jefferson, her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc. (BGBT), and her wardrobe and tour managers, Amanda Nomura and Carlina Gugliotta. This is the second lawsuit Lizzo has faced in recent months, following a similar complaint filed in August by three of her former employees.
Lizzo has yet to comment on the lawsuit, but her team has previously denied the allegations in the August lawsuit. It is unclear how the singer and her team will respond to the new complaint.
