Key takeaways:

  • Post-tropical cyclone Lee made landfall in Nova Scotia with maximum sustained wind speeds of 70 miles per hour.
  • At least one person has been confirmed dead in Searsport, Maine.
  • The storm was just a few miles short of the threshold necessary for a tropical storm to be considered a Category 1 hurricane.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported Sunday morning that the post-tropical cyclone Lee was located 70 miles (113 kilometers) west-northwest of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and about 180 miles (290 kilometers) west of Channel-Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland. The storm had maximum sustained wind speeds of 70 miles per hour when it made landfall in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia on Saturday.

At least one person has been confirmed dead in Searsport, Maine, a coastal town and seaport about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Augusta, after Lee brought strong winds, heavy rain and dangerous storm surge to parts of New England and southeastern Canada this weekend.

The storm was just a few miles short of the threshold necessary for a tropical storm to be considered a Category 1 hurricane, which is assigned when maximum sustained winds reach 75 mph.

The top sustained wind speed had dropped to 45 mph (70 kph) with some higher gusts expected as the storm kept weakening Sunday. Officials have withdrawn some warnings and predicted the storm will disappear early this week.

The National Hurricane Center is continuing to monitor the storm and advise people in affected areas to remain vigilant.
