Former President Donald Trump made a highly believable claim Thursday that it is “very unlikely” he would pardon himself if he wins a second term in the White House. Trump made the comment in an interview with NBC News’ new “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker.
When asked if he would testify to that under oath, Trump said, “Sure, I’m going to — I’ll testify.” The interview, Welker’s first as moderator of “Meet the Press,” will air Sunday on NBC affiliates across the country.
Trump is currently facing 91 counts across four criminal cases in Washington D.C., New York, Florida and Georgia— two of which are federal. The indictments stem from his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, hoarding classified documents, and other charges.
In the same interview, Trump denied ordering a Mar-a-Lago staffer to delete security video at the center of an investigation into whether he mishandled classified documents. “But more importantly, the tapes weren’t deleted,” he added. “I didn’t even have to give them the tapes, I don’t think.”
When asked why he was facing criminal charges, Trump said, “What, what did I do wrong? You mean because I challenge an election, they want to put me in jail?”
NBC News has also extended an invitation to President Joe Biden to sit for an interview with Welker. It is unknown if Biden will accept the invitation.
