On Monday, Grand Canyon National Park officials reported that a 55-year-old man from Manassas, Virginia, had died while attempting to hike from the South Rim to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in a single day.

Ranjith Varma had been reported in distress on the North Kaibab Trail, about one mile south of Cottonwood Campground, at around 2 p.m. on Saturday. Bystanders and rangers both attempted to resuscitate him, but were unsuccessful.

The South Rim to North Rim trek is a 21-mile journey that can take 12 to 15 hours to complete. Varma had been located toward the end of the trek when he became unresponsive.
